King David's response to Shimei Cursing

Bible tells us God called David A Man After My Own Heart

If we look at Samuel II Chapter 16 Verse 5 to 13, we see account of Shimei cursing David. David's response is exemplary in terms of his relationship with God.

David was fleeing Absalom, who had successfully dethroned David. David had to flee to save his life. Absalom was one of David's son and had kept a grudge against David and his half brother Amnon. Amnon had violated Tamar (Absalom's sister), but King did nothing because he loved Amnon.

David became king of Israel, after God had rejected king Saul and gave the throne to David. Shimei belonged to Saul's family, and held David responsible for Saul's dethrone and murder. However, David never killed Saul.

David was with his official and special guards (mighty men). Naturally, Abishai asked David's permission to cut Shimei's head and silence him. The David's response to this is accounted as...
..
..
10 But the king said, “What does this have to do with you, you son of Zeruiah? If he is cursing because the Lord said to him, ‘Curse David,’ who can ask, ‘Why do you do this?’”
11 David then said to Abishai and all his officials, “My son, my own flesh and blood, is trying to kill me. How much more, then, this Benjamite! Leave him alone; let him curse, for the Lord has told him to. 12 It may be that the Lord will look upon my misery and restore to me his covenant blessing instead of his curse today.”
..
..

To a normal human heart, this is perplexing. David can find numerous reasons to Silence him, but he does not choose to. He says
  1. God has asked Shimei to curse me
  2. May be God will look upon my misery, and give me blessing for this curse
He made the entire affair between Him and God. Everything and Everyone is just a passing circumstance. In first set of words, he talks about Punishment by God, and then talks about Restoration by God. He surrenders himself. Let me remind he is King of a nation, and still holds a lot power.

Even in life, if we, like David, take people (manager, spouse, children etc.) and circumstances out, and make it an affair between ourselves and God, we will not have questions, confusions and frustrations. It all emanates from one source, and a function of our actions and decisions.

I find it comforting.

Thanks for Reading. God bless.
